Star Trek, now a major media franchise, began as a television series created by Gene Roddenberry, debuting in 1966 and airing for three seasons on NBC. If followed the adventures of Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and his crew aboard the starship USS Enterprise. The series included one of television’s first multi-cultural casts. Star Trek developed a cult following of fans called Trekkies. The franchise now includes a wide range of spin-offs, including tv shows, movies, games, and toys.
